Blackboard Login Page Images – Contributions Welcome!

Our Blackboard login page often features images of the University of Southampton campuses.  With four front end servers we use four different photos at any time.  Which one you see depends on how busy each server is, you are always sent to the server which is least busy.

Blackboard Analytics – December 2013

Google Analytics and University of Southampton Blackboard service

Google Analytics (GA) is turned on within a number of MLE sites including Blackboard and Panopto. In the interest of openness we will share a number of pieces of analytical data with the community. Note that some data is from a smaller sample size and may not reflect 100% of users.

How can I share my Panopto recordings from one course with another?

One of the great things about Panopto is how secure the video is by default. Recording a lecture or presentation into your Blackboard course ensures that only the students and instructors on that course can see the video. However, sometimes you may have two or more similar courses and only wish to make a recording once.

This post will explain how record videos into one Panopto folder and for that folder to be visible to a second course.

Screen Sharing and Screen Recording with your Mobile or Tablet

We are often asked how to stream the display of a mobile device to another computer, or how to make a recording of their mobile or tablet’s screen.

We have already discussed doing this with Apple Devices http://blog.soton.ac.uk/mle/2013/08/27/ipads-in-theatres/ which will require either an Apple TV, Apple Mac, or a combination of expensive cables to achieve screen sharing and screen recording.

Today Graham and Louis are presenting “MLE Goes Mobile” at the iSolutions departmental meeting and to celebrate I’m going to write this post about my own experiences with screen sharing and screen recording with Android.  I was particularly inspired to do this when Louis stated that the combination of cables and software used to create the iPad screen recordings came to about £1000.

Blackboard in the new data centre, what does it mean for me?

We recently migrated the University of Southampton Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment from the basement of the Maths Tower to the new iSolutions data centre which is located about 20 miles off campus.

This wasn’t a simple case of unplugging it, putting it in a white van, and driving it over, but a complex migration over the extended network into a brand new hardware setup running on a different operating system, using brand new storage and load balancers.  You can find out more of the technical details in the tech team blog.

The average user doesn’t care about such topics however, so what benefit does the new infrastructure bring to the average student or member of staff of the University of Southampton?

First look: New MySouthampton for Android

We’ve got our hands on a test version of the new Android MySouthampton. Some great strides have been made in making the Android version as functional as the iOS application, so hopefully the 20% of students running Android will be very happy with it.
