From this came the further idea of including the audience in the rehearsal, so that they could experience it \u2018from the inside\u2019. I chose &#8216;The Heavens Are Telling&#8217;\u00a0 from Haydn\u2019s <em>Creation<\/em> as it is simple enough to feasibly tackle within 45 minutes, but hard enough to provide a challenge. It is also an upbeat piece of music, to maximise the enjoyability of the afternoon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-362\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0141.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-362 \" alt=\"IMG_0141\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0141-300x149.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0141-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0141-1024x511.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0141-700x349.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A substantial alto section starts to gather for the event<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The idea of the event was that anybody of any musical experience or background could come along and join in. Therefore, I had to prepare easy parts for both choir and orchestra. I didn&#8217;t know what size orchestra would turn up, and how many I would have on each part, so I had to make sure that any part could be covered by any other instrument. This involved, for example, putting the alto trombone into Eb so that it could be played by a saxophone. I also had to create parts for ukulele and bass guitar, as I couldn\u2019t turn away anybody who wanted to play.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-363\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0148.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-363 \" alt=\"IMG_0148\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0148-300x178.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0148-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0148-1024x609.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2014\/01\/IMG_0148-700x416.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Choir, orchestra and Kevin in full flight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the day, I had over 100 people singing and around 33 people in the orchestra. The choir immediately struck me as competent but shy, so I decided to work in a way that would help their confidence. A note-by-note \u2018repeat after me\u2019 rehearsal, while good for experienced singers with confidence, would only expose and embarrass less seasoned singers, so I opted to keep them singing together as much as possible, repeating sections to give them more chance of picking it up on their own, and at all times making sure that they were singing loudly and enjoying themselves. At the end of the concert, we \u2018performed\u2019 the entire piece &#8211; a huge achievement for all of those who had never done anything like this before.
