I was planning a series of concerts which would each consist of two large-scale pieces \u2014 Matthew\u2019s new piece was to be performed alongside Michael Finnissy\u2019s <em>English Country <\/em><em>Tunes<\/em>.\u00a0 The year before we had both become excited and intrigued by Peter Ablinger\u2019s works including his ongoing cycle,<em> Voices and Piano<\/em>, in which recordings of the voice of a renowned individual (taken from interviews, speeches or readings) are played alongside, and analysed, transcribed, interpreted by the solo piano part.<\/p>\n<p>Partially in response to Ablinger\u2019s work, Matthew decided to incorporate recorded sounds into the new piece, but in this instance triggered by the playing of a sampler keyboard placed on top of the acoustic piano. <em>Popular Contexts<\/em> became the first in a continuing series of works for Matthew, with six volumes now completed for varying ensembles, each incorporating samples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site..jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-204 alignright\" alt=\"sr382-site.\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site.-300x300.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site.-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site.-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site.-268x268.jpg 268w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/11\/sr382-site..jpg 330w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>The samples in \u201cPopular Contexts\u201d interact with the acoustic piano in a variety of different ways. To start with, they shadow the acoustic sounds both in pitch and rhythm, but quickly take on a separate identity, informing and recontextualising the situation.<\/p>\n<p>After the first performance in 2010, we decided that it was important to record <em>Popular Contexts<\/em> and agreed that a selection of Ablinger\u2019s <em>Voices and Piano<\/em> would make the ideal partnership on a CD.
