{"id":134,"date":"2013-10-28T18:49:21","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T18:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/?p=134"},"modified":"2013-12-21T12:55:30","modified_gmt":"2013-12-21T12:55:30","slug":"running-music-workshops-for-cochlear-implantees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/2013\/10\/28\/running-music-workshops-for-cochlear-implantees\/","title":{"rendered":"Running music workshops for cochlear implantees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/logo6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-140 alignright\" alt=\"logo6\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/logo6.png\" width=\"174\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>People with hearing loss who benefit from having a cochlear implant often report problems with enjoying music, and Southampton researchers from Music and the Institute for Vibration Research have been working on rehabilitation programmes that can help.\u00a0 Rachel van Besouw (who leads the AHRC-funded multidisciplinary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/current_projects\/compositions.html\">Compositions for Cochlear Implantees<\/a> project as Principal Investigator) tells us about a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/news\/training_event.shtml\">professionals&#8217; training event on running music workshops for cochlear implant users<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ais.southampton.ac.uk\/\">University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137 \" alt=\"Workshop4\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop4-300x157.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop4-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop4.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben Oliver demonstrates percussion activities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We&#8217;ve gained quite a bit of experience in running music workshops for adult cochlear implant users, having run 12 workshops over the past 3 years (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/news\/september_workshop.shtml\">read more about the most recent workshop here<\/a>) and we thought it would be helpful to share this experience through a training event and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/music_info\/professionals.html\">Good Practice Guide<\/a> to encourage and support other professionals in providing music rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-144\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-144 \" alt=\"Workshop7\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop7-300x178.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samantha and Edna describe their experiences of listening to music before losing their hearing and after getting a cochlear implant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Music therapist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/members\/sarah_hodkinson.html\">Sarah Hodkinson<\/a> led both of these activities and we had contributions from expert cochlear implant users Edna and Samantha, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/members\/mary_grasmeder.html\">Mary Grasmeder<\/a>, a clinical scientist at the Auditory Implant Service, and composer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/members\/ben_oliver.html\">Ben Oliver<\/a>, who is also Co-Investigator on the project.\u00a0 The training day was held at the Auditory Implant Service in September and was attended by 22 professionals (including audiologists, speech and language therapists, rehabilitationists, music therapists, researchers and students) from the UK, Europe and China.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-138 alignleft\" alt=\"Workshop5\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/maths\/files\/2013\/10\/Workshop5.jpg\" width=\"125\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a>We started the day with presentations on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/music_info\/professionals.html\">how music is processed by a cochlear implant<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/music_info\/professionals.html\">hearing loss, performance with a cochlear implant and music<\/a>. Edna and Samantha then gave very moving personal accounts of their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/mfg\/music_info\/music_and_my_ci.html\">experiences of listening to music<\/a> prior and post-implantation.
