{"id":2096,"date":"2015-11-09T08:53:42","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T08:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jastypes.wordpress.com\/?p=67"},"modified":"2015-11-09T08:53:42","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T08:53:42","slug":"educational-use-of-social-media-an-ethical-issue-from-this-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jastypes.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/09\/educational-use-of-social-media-an-ethical-issue-from-this-exposure\/","title":{"rendered":"Educational Use of Social Media: An Ethical Issue from this Exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of the various ethical issues raised by educational use of social media, one I find particularly essential to discuss in depth is the issue of <b><i>bullying. <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text\/html' width='560' height='315' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N2saRspJFNo?version=3&#038;rel=1&%23038;fs=1&%23038;showsearch=0&%23038;showinfo=1&%23038;iv_load_policy=1&%23038;wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the use of social media for educational purposes is increasingly popular, alike what we are doing for this module, there is an obvious growth in the participation of online bullying as well.<em><strong> 1 million<\/strong> <\/em>children were cyber-bullied on just Facebook alone in the past year (Consumer Reports, 2011). <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>Isn\u2019t this figure shocking?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While many educational institutes recognise the need to integrate social media as a platform for\u00a0communication between teachers and students in their learning, it is difficult to monitor student activity during lesson when everyone are hidden behind screens.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Many abuse this opportunity to learn, by participating in bullying acts online &#8211; <b><i>no matter if it was meant as innocent fun or stemmed from a malicious intent. <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Online bullying happens not only between students &#8211; often, teachers are the victims of online ridicule when students rant their frustrations publicly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking-teachers.png\"><img class=\"wp-image-68 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking-teachers.png?w=450&#038;h=295\" alt=\"Topic 4 mocking teachers\" width=\"450\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking-teachers.jpg\"><img class=\" wp-image-69 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking-teachers.jpg?w=449&#038;h=305\" alt=\"topic 4 mocking teachers\" width=\"449\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><em>Image Sources: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickmeme.com\/\" >www.quickmeme.com<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">See these <i>memes?<\/i> Ridiculing teachers have transitioned into a <em><strong>social norm<\/strong><\/em> that online platforms are constantly churning fresh, relatable materials to allow students to indulge in this unhealthy act. I myself have witnessed friends circulating similar images online, with specific names of teachers mentioned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes, the bullying gets even more personal when students brazenly edit their teachers\u2019 faces into the memes! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking.png\"><img class=\" wp-image-70 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/topic-4-mocking.png?w=393&#038;h=393\" alt=\"Topic 4 Mocking\" width=\"393\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An example of an\u00a0online friend publicly humiliating a train commuter on\u00a0social media, out of <b><i>pure fun<\/i><\/b>.<i> It doesn\u2019t sound very fun if the victim was you, does it?<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/img_6143.png\"><img class=\" wp-image-72 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jastypes.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/img_6143.png?w=330&#038;h=574\" alt=\"IMG_6143\" width=\"330\" height=\"574\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Any form of bullying is not acceptable, what more if these bullies are <b><i>educators? <\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Shocked? I am<b> <i>appalled.<\/i><\/b> Facebook is a popular platform for educational communities to easily share ideas, submit assignments, etc. However, sometimes teachers themselves abuse this learning avenue.
