Sometimes small things can be important – and that’s rarely truer than when you’re talking about web addresses. LibGuides allows us to use our own web address – but, just like if you buy a web address for your own website, it’s up to us to sort out obtaining that address and the DNS redirects.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand that last bit – it just means that we had to ask iSolutions to set up a web address for us, which would then point to our LibGuides content.
I was all set to suggest “libguides.soton.ac.uk” (which you’ll see follows the lead of many LibGuides users) – until Elizabeth suggested “library.soton.ac.uk”. Which in hindsight is completely and obviously perfect.
This will be meaningful and memorable for our users – and it’s not far off our previous website address (www.library.soton.ac.uk), which I still find myself typing from time to time! Yes, there’s the risk that there may be a little bit of confusion between our website and LibGuides addresses – but I think that’s an acceptable consequence of having a URL that all our users will find immediately intuitive.
So here you are – the web address for our LibGuides pages (when the service is set up):
