Please join us on Wednesday 11 December 2013,\u00a05.00pm-6.30pm in Building 65\/1145.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/ilc\/files\/2013\/11\/tns-seminar-11-dec.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-548\" alt=\"tns seminar 11 dec\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/ilc\/files\/2013\/11\/tns-seminar-11-dec-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><strong>The Making of Latin American Music: Passion &amp; Subversion\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">\u00a0Professor Carmen Bernand,\u00a0Universit\u00e9 Paris-X<\/p>\n<p>The Americas may be\u00a0rightly\u00a0proud\u00a0of two\u00a0of the\u00a0most important\u00a0forms of\u00a0modern\u00a020<sup>th<\/sup>-century\u00a0music: jazz and latin.\u00a0 But before the invention of jazz bands and salsas, a new music emerged from the\u00a0European,\u00a0Indian and\u00a0African traditions at the beginning of the 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century in \u2018The First America\u2019 (Hispanic dominions and Brazil),\u00a0until sound reproduction changes the diffusion and the reception of popular music.\u00a0 Songs, melodies, dance, and public exhibitions, with their own heroes (rogues, prostitutes, bandits and revolutionaries) and their ideals of sex, love and freedom, tell us a story very different from the official one.
