The Intercultural Staff Café launch

The Intercultural Staff Café launch,   Wednesday 21 September, 2 pm – 4 pm in the Nuffield Kitchen

Some of you may have attended the International Staff Cafes run by Julie Reeves of ILIaD.  The aim of these was to help new international staff become familiar with working here. In collaboration with Julie, we’re opening these up to all staff – wherever they’re from, however long they’ve been here and whatever their role.  Our aim is to hold cafes across all our campuses, and our launch event takes place at Highfield, where we’ll talk more about our hopes for this initiative. We’ll also have two informal talks: one from Keith Johnstone, our new Director of International Relations and Development, who’ll share his experiences of working overseas, and one from Aline Giordano, our Doctoral College Manager who will share some personal experiences.  There will be plenty of time for discussion connection with colleagues. You don’t need to attend for the whole two hours, but we do need an idea of numbers (for tea, coffee and cake!) so please register by Friday 16 September through Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/intercultural-staff-cafe-tickets-27211475255

Finally, alongside the above two events, we’re encouraging colleagues to join our network. If you don’t have time to create a profile, we can link to your existing staff profile.  You may want to add a line or two about your particular interest in this field.  Please contact us if you would like to be included on our network pages.

2nd Intercultural Café – Reading into your imagination

Tuesday 19th of July 2016, 6pm at The Art House.

Ever tried to understand how imagination affects the way you see cultures? Either your own or another culture? Have you ever read a book and felt like you were part of it?

If any of these questions have ever crossed your mind (or not), this Intercultural Café is for you! (and for everyone!!)

Join a small group of us, both local and international residents, to think about how we can use our imagination and literature to discover new cultures or perhaps more about your own. You don’t even have had to read a book or been abroad, simply come to have a chat, meet new people and have a great time in a fantastic environment.

Intern update – A big hello from the new team

We have come to the end of our first week working with the project and we have to say – we are SO excited to see where we can take it this summer! The previous interns Caitlin and Nancy have done a fantastic job, what with the Welcome to Our World festival in February, the regular Intercultural Cafes as well as all of the other things they have done to encourage a stronger and better connected community here on campus and around Southampton. We truly hope that we can follow in your footsteps and take this project further as we can see from the success your events that this project has so much potential.

Before we truly get started, we would like to introduce ourselves to you.

There are three of us this summer: Megan Byrne, Caterina Balzano and Rahul RP Nair. We are all from very diverse backgrounds, study at three different faculties and speak 6 languages between us (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and Malayalam). We have some very fun ideas for this summer and the next academic year so follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter if you haven’t already done so to make sure you don’t miss any updates.

To get to know us that bit more, here are our best party tricks:

  • Megan is knows all of the dance and words to Mararena, always a winner
  • Caterina can beat anyone at doing the limbo so don’t even try
  • Rahul can take out a piece of paper from a glass without smashing it #magicianinthemaking

We can’t wait to show you what we come up with and hope you like it,
ICS Team 2016
