As part of this award Kate will be giving an honorary lecture at EGU and the BGA research in progress meeting, both in 2014. This is the second year running a Southampton Staff member has won this award as Derek Keir was the recepient in 2013 (<a title=\"British Geophysical Association Postgraduate Research in Progress Meeting 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/ggblog\/2013\/11\/06\/british-geophysical-association-postgraduate-research-in-progress-meeting-2013\/\">Blog posting 06\/11\/2013<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Kate was recognised for both her work on defining the nature of the lithosphere-asthenosphere plate boundary at the global scale (e.g. <a title=\"Rychert &amp; Shearer, 2009 - Science\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/324\/5926\/495.full\" target=\"_blank\">Rychert &amp; Shearer, 2009 &#8211; Science<\/a>) and more regional scale problems such as her recent work (along with colleagues from SCRIPPS and\u00a0 Nick Harmon also in OES) on the Hawaiian plume (<a title=\"Rychert et al., 2013 - Nature Geoscience\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/ngeo\/journal\/v6\/n8\/full\/ngeo1878.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rychert et al., 2013 &#8211; Nature Geoscience<\/a>) and which was recently recognised in a News Feature in Nature (<a title=\"Nature News, December 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/earth-science-under-the-volcano-1.14323\" target=\"_blank\">Nature News Feature 09\/12\/13).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Kate<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Royal Astronomical Society has recently announced that Dr. Kate Rychert will be the 2014 recipient of the Bullerwell award, which is given annually to &#8220;An outstanding young British Geophysicist&#8221;.
