{"id":181,"date":"2013-09-25T14:14:10","date_gmt":"2013-09-25T14:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/ggblog\/?p=181"},"modified":"2014-02-20T11:45:09","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T11:45:09","slug":"scopac-grant-awarded-for-sediment-transport-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/ggblog\/2013\/09\/scopac-grant-awarded-for-sediment-transport-study\/","title":{"rendered":"SCOPAC grant awarded for sediment transport study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shari Gallop, Charlie Thompson and Ivan Haigh have been funded by SCOPAC (Standing \u00a0Conference on Problems Associated with the Coastline;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scopac.org.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.scopac.org.uk\/<\/a>) and the Southern Coastal Group (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.southerncoastalgroup.org.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.southerncoastalgroup.org.uk\/<\/a>) to investigate sediment transport pathways offshore of Poole and Christchurch Bays in The Solent, UK. They plan to focus on Dolphin Bank and Dolphin Sand that are approximately 10 km offshore. Dolphin Bank is 15 km long and Dolphin Sand about 5 km long. Therefore, these banks contain large volumes of sediment. However, currently there is no detailed understanding of if these banks are relic (inactive), or are functioning as sediment sinks, or if they are sources of sediment to any areas of the coast.
