{"id":2274,"date":"2015-03-20T15:26:27","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T15:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/evoice\/?p=2274"},"modified":"2015-04-01T16:04:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T16:04:06","slug":"media-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/evoice\/media-round-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Media roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Welcome to the latest edition of the University media digest, which covers major media appearances during the month of February.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In February, media appearances relating to the University created\u00a0<strong>over 207 million opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0to view and hear stories via print, broadcast and online outlets. A total of 2,948 news clippings were logged in media outlets based across 28 countries and tweets about press releases from the university twitter account reached over 170 thousand users.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a selection of stories which reached regional, national and international audiences:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/evoice\/files\/2015\/03\/Carbon-Ocean-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2280\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/evoice\/files\/2015\/03\/Carbon-Ocean-web-150x119.jpg\" alt=\"IODP Expedition 353 Indian Monsoon\" width=\"150\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a>Carbon records make waves<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two pieces of research by Gavin Foster and colleagues in Ocean and Earth Science gained major international media coverage over a two week period. The first paper, looking at climate sensitivity during the Pliocene to predict future climate change, was covered by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-31131336\"><strong>BBC News<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2015\/02\/09\/why-climate-scientists-are-right-about-how-hot-the-planet-is-going-to-get\/\"><strong>The Washington Post<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>, <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-2939882\/IPCC-report-confirmed-Earth-s-similar-CO2-levels-3-million-years-ago-support-climate-predictions-planet-study-warns.html\"><strong>The Daily Mail<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>, The Independent,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/climate-change-millions-years-ago-confirm-ipcc-predictions-1486731\"><strong>International Business Times<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/earth-s-past-climate-reveals-future-global-warming\/\"><strong>Scientific American<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/local-national\/uk\/co2-evidence-backs-climate-study-30965058.html\"><strong>The Belfast Telegraph<\/strong><\/a>, as well as numerous other outlets to create over 160 news clippings. The second paper, which suggested a release of carbon from the deep ocean helped to end the last ice age, also received coverage on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-31424597\"><strong>BBC News website<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-2949595\/Did-deep-sea-currents-end-ice-age-Carbon-dioxide-released-ocean-floor-triggered-warming-claims-study.html\"><strong>The Mail Online<\/strong><\/a>, as well as\u00a0<strong>BBC Radio 5 Live,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/home\/environment\/global-warming\/Carbon-that-was-released-from-oceans-helped-end-Ice-Age-UK-scientists-confirm\/articleshow\/46217929.cms\"><strong>The Times of India<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>,<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/environment\/global-warming\/carbon-that-was-released-from-oceans-helped-end-ice-age-uk-scientists-confirm\/articleshow\/46217929.cms\"><strong>The Economic Times<\/strong><\/a><em><strong>,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/news-ani\/carbon-dioxide-release-from-deep-ocean-ended-last-ice-age-115021200732_1.html\"><strong>The Business Standard<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/carbon-released-from-the-ocean-helped-end-the-last-ice-age-2015-2\"><strong>Business Insider (Australia)<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/2015\/02\/12\/did-ocean-big-burps-end-last-ice-age\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\"><strong>Fox News<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/examviral\/science-world\/did-vast-co2-reservoirs-locked-in-the-oceans-end-the-last-ice-age-312074.html\"><strong>The Irish Examiner<\/strong><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and various other outlets.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Detecting dark matter<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>News of a proposed particle that may help detect dark matter was reported around the world including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/hypothetical-particle-may-get-to-the-heart-of-universes-dark-matter-10016943.html\"><strong>The Independent<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/wires\/pa\/article-2934921\/Particle-explain-matter-mystery.html\"><strong>The Daily Mail<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/weird-science\/could-particle-x-explain-dark-matter-scientists-have-plan-n296581\"><strong>NBC News (USA)<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/home\/science\/Proposed-particle-to-spot-dark-matter\/articleshow\/46089930.cms\"><strong>Times of India<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/news\/archive\/2015-02\/02\/dark-matter-particle\"><strong>Wired magazine<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/new-fundamental-particle-lighter-dark-matter\/35859\/\">Gizmag<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.redorbit.com\/news\/space\/1113324939\/low-mass-particle-could-lead-to-dark-matter-detection-013015\/\"><strong>Red Orbit<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/30238\/20150203\/new-hypothetical-particle-might-help-answer-questions-about-dark-matter.htm\"><strong>Tech Times<\/strong><\/a>. You can view the feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-31105678\">here<\/a> via the BBC News website.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Jane Ball was interviewed on BBC Radio Four\u2019s File on Four programme and Professor David Sear spoke with BBC Countryfile\u2019s Matt Baker about the lost Suffolk town of Dunwich reaching an estimated 6.5 million viewers. The latest academic featured is Dr Low Sow Yiong whose expertise lies in Electronic Systems, Circuits and Mathematics. The Sun reaches an estimated 305,000 readers in Malaysia every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Conversation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>University academics contributed 16 opinion pieces to The Conversation during February and March.
