Welcome to the latest edition of the University media digest, which covers major media appearances during the month of January.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In that time, media appearances relating to the University created\u00a0over 72 million opportunities<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to view and hear stories via print, broadcast and online outlets. The advertising equivalent value of these appearances in print and via commercial broadcast media\u00a0reached \u00a3503,364.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Below is a selection of stories which reached regional, national and international audiences:<\/p>\n

\"maddy\"<\/a>Patient-Doctor communication<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Research by\u00a0Dr Maddy Greville-Harris<\/a>\u00a0that found a perceived lack of empathy on the part of doctors could lead to a worsening of patients’ symptoms, was covered in more than 180 UK regional newspapers, as well as The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Yahoo News<\/a>\u00a0and media outlets in 12 other countries, including The Times of India<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>The Business Standard<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and\u00a0The Malaysian Sun<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

A new cell marking technique to help understand how our brain works, developed by\u00a0Dr Diego Gomez-Nicola<\/a>, was reported by the\u00a0Times of India<\/em><\/a>, <\/em><\/strong>Daily Echo<\/em><\/a>,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Financial Express<\/em><\/a>,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Economic Times<\/em><\/a>,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Medical News Today<\/a> and other\u00a0specialist news websites<\/a>. \"bbcjanefalkingham\"<\/a>Focus on ageing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Jane Falkingham<\/a>\u00a0reached over 1.5 million viewers in a live broadcast by\u00a0BBC Breakfast<\/strong><\/a> concentrating on the issues of an ageing population. The programme, at the Lowry Arts venue, also highlighted an exhibition about the subject being taken on a tour of the UK by the\u00a0ESRC Centre for Population Change<\/a>\u00a0based at the University. Hoegh Osaka incident<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall\u00a0<\/a> gave comment to the world’s media on the Hoegh Osaka, which ran aground in the Solent, including\u00a0Good Morning Britain, Channel 4 News (online), BBC News Channel, BBC World Service, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC TV South, ITV Meridian,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Daily Express<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Daily Echo<\/strong><\/em>, BBC Radio Solent<\/strong>, numerous BBC regional radio stations, Press Association<\/strong>\u00a0and a number of regional newspapers.<\/p>\n

The Conversation<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

University academics contributed 12 opinion pieces to The Conversation during January. These articles had a total readership of 618,617 and were republished on popular websites including IFL Science, Business Insider and The Huffington Post.<\/p>\n
