Patient and Public Involvement

What is patient and public involvement?

We understand patient and public involvement (or PPI) to mean research, and the use of research in practice, carried out with or by patients and the public, rather than to, about or for them.

Examples of PPI include:

  • Working with members of a voluntary group to agree research priorities
  • Including patients in a research project Steering Group to help manage the project
  • Collaborating with members of a local community to agree how and when research findings should be used within a health service
  • Developing information leaflets to encourage patients and carers to participate
  • Supporting and training a service user to carry out focus groups with other service users

What is WISeRD?

The WISeRD (Wessex Involvement in Service Research and Delivery) group includes both patients/the public and CLAHRC staff members involved in each of the six CLAHRC research themes.  It advises the CLAHRC on meaningful involvement of patients and the public in health research and implementation.   WISeRD is jointly chaired by a public contributor and the CLAHRC PPI lead.
