| 390014F3 | Improving End of Life Care for Patients with COPD (HS38) | Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common lung condition which affects upto 3 million people in the UK. It is a progressive condition leading to increasing respiratory symptoms and in some patients frequent hospital admissions. Currently the clinical tools to estimate prognosis are not optimal and patients with severe disease often will not have had the opportunity to discuss or plan for the end of life.Currently palliative care pathways and resources are focused on patients with malignancy but there is a growing recognition that patients with chronic diseases like COPD would benefit greatly from palliative approaches to care and that pathways to effectively manage the end of life, which do not require emergency admission are needed.
This project will seek to explore patientsā and carersā understanding and expectations of COPD and end of life care. The next step will involve mapping the training needs of staff managing patients with severe disease to discuss and plan for end of life care. This will lead to working with the existing healthcare resources and professionals to map an end of life pathway for COPD and to trial this approach to care within the Wessex CLAHRC. The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southampton in partnership with one of ourpartner Wessex NHS organisations (TBC), is offering a Clinical Academic Doctoral Fellowship for a qualified Nurse. This is an exciting opportunity for healthcare professionals interested in career progression with a focus on developing research whilst in clinical practice. Together with our NHS partners we are challenging practice, transforming healthcare, improving quality and involving patients and their carers. This innovative scheme is a four year, full-time doctoral programme of study that incorporates clinical work alongside research. Clinical Academic Doctoral Fellows are registered full-time students with the Faculty of Health Sciences and work in the clinical area associated with the research. Fellows are paid an annual tax free stipend (currently Ā£14,000) and receive a small budget for consumables each year. The University tuition fees are also waivered. The stipend is commensurate with a NHS Band 5 health professional salary and includes a small incremental increase year on year. All Fellows receive a laptop for their use throughout the fellowship. The successful candidate will spend two days per week as a Band 5 Registered Nurse in one of our partner NHS organisations and 3 days per week working on the PhD research study. You will join a thriving and expanding group of Clinical Academic Doctoral Fellows using the purpose built Clinical Academic Facilities.Fellows will hold an honorary contract with the NHS organisation. |
