The only reason this is possible is due to the fact that the UK, as with much of the western developed world, is an example of a Capitalist society. In a nutshell, this is where the private sector generally controls the economic sector through making trade for profit, rather than control from the state. This is represented in both the political and sociological state of the country. Fundamentally, capitalism is the social system whereby the means for producing and distributing goods is controlled by a group of people – whom will then employ workers and their services in return for payment. When we have a capitalist society, typically profit made as a result of the operation of a business or company is reinvested in the aim to further increase the profit generated further down the line. Once such view of capitalism is that: capitalism is the system that emerges among a group of free individuals, each applying time and reason to sustain his or her own life, each the owner of the means to do so, freely trading among themselves. Capitalism through has become associated with so much more than just its basic meaning; since propaganda spread during WW2 and the Cold War, Capitalism has become synonymous with democracy, human rights and freedom. Conversely, other forms of economic and political control have been attributed to undesirable ways of life; one only needs to look at how communism to see the extent of this. One result of the ‘morality’ of Capitalism is that it is so tightly interwoven with the American Dream. This is an ideology that originated in America, but has become present in many forms worldwide – that life should be better and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement (James Truslow Adams, 1932). It is likely that most people will have heard something similar at some points in their lives; in that we are only restricted by ourselves and how hard we are willing to work. For those hoping to become involved in business (whether its joining a business or setting one up yourself) it’s a great reminder of just how important it is to stay motivated. Richard Branson didn’t become a multi-millionaire without hard work!

Capitalism Everyone enrolled on the business management course presumably has a desire to attain a business management role, whether it be public or private sector, as a career.
