Sutaria, first year business student at Southampton, asks if we can eradicate poverty.

You are living in the 21st century where the difference between the rich and the poor is increasing even more (Reuben, 2015). So, if you are running a big organisation and earning sufficient amount of profit, do you think it would be fair for you to share your profit with the poor? Is charity the solution for poor people? Does it solve the cause of their problem (BBC, 2009)?

This is something that we should think about. The rich are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer. But, if the rich would not have got richer then probably the poor would not even have a chance to improve their condition (Gaber, 2005). A rich man would think that money is the reason for full happiness whereas a poor man would believe that money is the root of all evil. But what would be the cause of such condition faced by the poor?

One of the main reason would be due to lack of education among the poor people, which leads to an ineffective workforce (Burns, 2016). Also, there is a lack of equality of opportunities in many countries. But, can we blame the poor for being poor? The government of the country also plays a vital role in this. The rich do not get much affected by the government policies but the poor do. It spends more on other facilities that would benefit the rich than focusing on the problems faced by the poor on daily basis (Shah, 2005).

Another question that would come to mind would be how can the gap between the rich and the poor decrease in the near future? Can it even ever decrease? Research has shown that the inequality is decreasing to a certain extent as there is an increase in jobs performed by the women in the poor sector. Also, the introduction of working families tax has benefited the low-income group to a greater extent (Dickens’, 2016). The gap in the UK has narrowed drastically compared to other countries, where we not only see a reduction in inequality but also an improvement in the lifestyle (Easton, 2016).

In terms of business, if the big organisations contribute to the welfare of the poor, in a way it will be beneficial for them as it will increase the goodwill of the company. It is known that not only the unemployed but also the employed people are relatively poor (Ludlow, 2015). This is because they get low income for their work. So, our main concern should be to focus on the income level of the people to fight this.

Lastly, the UK has strategically planned to eradicate poverty and bring a balance between the rich and the poor by thoroughly examining the root cause of poverty (Ryan, 2016). It is believed that if the society if more equal then it will tend to have better facilities and cooperation than societies with greater inequalities (S, 2012).

Rajvi R.
