Joshua McNulty gives his thoughts on his lecture about the future of work.

The brilliant guest speaker, Peter Cheese, talked about the ‘future of work and future skills’ from a thought provoking perspective. Peter discussed not only what future employers will be looking for, but also an idea of what the future world’s economy will be looking like in 20 or 30 years. He began by asking us where we are from and then asked, “What age do you think you will retire at?”. He then went on to say that you probably won’t go through life having only one job. We all learn and develop from having different jobs. Traditional jobs are also disappearing and new types of jobs are being created due to the ‘gig economy’. Peter mentioned AirBnB and Uber being part of this new type of work where you get paid for doing more of a ‘favour’ than being an employee.

Peter also spoke about artificial intelligence and how jobs are being replaced to do technology getting smarter. He mentioned in today’s society that commentary on sports seen on TV is being done by computers instead of human beings. Peter also told us that sometimes we aren’t even aware of this; the Alan Turing test is becoming something of the past and this new technology is becoming more innovative. Programs can learn from other programs and now computers can be ‘in-charge’ of other computers.

Peter then went into detail about what future employers are looking for, specifically CIPD’s requirements. For a job you’re applying to, you must have job skills to do with the role you want. These are generally broken down into two parts: core skills and employability skills. Core skills, you are required to have: digital skills, financial understanding, project management, critical thinking/problem solving and people management. For employability skills, you need: work discipline and time management, communication skills, literacy/numeracy, resilience and learning skills, empathy, collaboration and listening skills.

Overall, Mr Cheese’s talk was very insightful and I can confidently say that everyone in the room was provoked to think about their future and what technology will do for us. I personally think technology is a massive advantage to the business world and I am excited to use it to my advantage.

Joshua McNulty is a first year, undergraduate Student at the University of Southampton.
