As we know, University fees have already increased ridiculously over the last few decades, but now Government ministers plan to increase the fee’s “above £9000 for the next academic year” (Pells, 2016). So when we’re applying for University, do we consider how much we’re investing without the guarantee of a secure job at the end of it? At the other end of the spectrum however, are employers wanting to hire students who’ve just graduated?

Employers seek co-workers with the knowledge needed for the job but more importantly, the relevant work skills and experience. The Independent newspaper reported how employees are “turning up to the office in flip-flops” (Jinman, 2015). Adding to this, The Telegraph’s discovered how “almost all graduate recruits” (Paton, 2013) are starting work without the essential skills needed in the workplace. So is University really the only option to ‘get rich’? In 2014 “55,000 18 year olds” (Williams, 2015) chose the Apprenticeship route over University, proving how popular this alternative option to University is! The opportunity of a placement year throughout your university course could be very beneficial also, with WHICH UNIVERSITY finding that “one in three got a job with a company they’d worked for in the past” (Ball, 2013), potentially helping our career by allowing us to link work and studies in together.

As we have all probably seen in recent news, the “UK’s unemployment fell by 37,000 to 1.6 million in 3 months” meaning we have “hit an all time low” (BBC News, 2016). Employers are beginning to choose to hire international migrants over British Nationals. This is said to be due to the fact that “local candidates lack skills” (Lawton, 2015). So if migrants are able to secure jobs here in the UK, why is our level of unemployment so high when there are clearly jobs available? The Independent reports that the National Economic and Social Research found that “recruiting skilled foreigners allows companies to become more efficient and expand their businesses” (Kirkup, Dominiczak, 2013), showing us how the contemporary business world is benefiting from the variety of people they are now employing. It seems that a number of migrants choose the UK to seek better paid jobs, which personally, I think is why they’re more motivated to work harder as they appreciate what they earn greater than what some of us Brits may. The USA are in the same boat as us though, and for example, Sharpe’s book about the “Loss of Jobs in the ’90’s” expresses how unemployment has contributed to “crime, to ill health” and “to the alienation of young people” showing the social impacts it is causing too (Sharpe, 1996, pg. 14). With young people feeling alienated in society, it may prevent them for developing vital life/work skills, which even Royals like Prince Charles have claimed that the UK’s “education system leaves youngsters unable to develop into successful adults” (English, 2013). So if we’re unable to develop these skills in our younger years, how are we expected to be able to actively contribute to society through our future occupations?

Chloe Phillips studies BSc Business Management at Southampton Business School.
