I’m only joking of course, we have all very much enjoyed our summers, and we hope that those joining us for the first, and those returning to Southampton have also enjoyed theirs.

Fresh from the beaches, Tom Rowledge, Sam Phelps and I made the long journey from Bournemouth to Loughborough to give a presentation at the RAISE conference on Student Engagement. It was another early start but that gave us plenty of time to catch up after busy summers and to consume copious amounts of coffee!

We arrived in Loughborough around 10 o’clock, ready to give our presentation. Ours was entitled: “Student Created Learning, supercharged with Technology”. We opted for a more informal explanation of the project and the creation of our learning environment using digital technology, as this conference had a number of students in attendance as well as academics. Sam opened the presentation by explaining what the project was, the three main aims and a “snapshot”. We have used the snapshot method of explaining the Co-Creation project at a number of conferences now and have found it works very well. It effectively involves telling the audience what the project has been working on in the past week, past month and then past term. This gives the audience a sense of the scale and the pace of development, while ensuring we are talking about meaningful and relevant activities. On this occasion, Sam also utilised some of the recent feedback we have received from other members of the co-creation group: the audience seemed suitably impressed!

Tom and I then took the baton from Sam and began to expand on the aim of creating a learning environment and how technology was central to this aim. We explained our use of this blog, and of various Social Media channels and how these helped students to help feel like they were part of a learning environment at all times, rather than just when they are in lecture theatres. We summarised by talking about how technology can be best integrated into learning by engaging students at the early stages, and then took questions. The questions were excellent, and the positive feedback we received both during the Q&A and more informally afterwards was really uplifting. We are pursuing a couple of new projects following on from people we met at RAISE and will keep you updated on these.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we could not stay for much of the conference, but what we did see was very enjoyable. A presentation on creative learning around conservation from Ian Bride (University of Kent) was a particular highlight. At first we were questioning whether the presentation was relevant to our project, but then towards the end Ian explained the importance of creativity in learning and in curriculum design as a whole. We chatted to Ian for around 45minutes after our presentation, and it was really interesting to hear his creative suggestions for both curricular and extra-curricular Business Management based activities. The venue at Loughborough University was lovely, and we extend our thanks to the organizing team and to the hospitality team for a great day.

I have now been lucky enough to attend quite a number of conferences representing the University and the Co-Design group in particular, and this is something I am immensely grateful for. I have learnt a lot from the academics and the material they have presented, but also about the workings of conferences themselves. To attend conferences as a student, can at times be daunting, and you definitely stand out (I’m sure Sam will vouch for this after his experiences in Edinburgh!). Standing out is not necessarily a bad thing, but I am sure you can imagine that there are some characters at the conferences who are not overly receptive to the idea of students attending, let alone presenting! Most of course are complimentary, but some would be short with us when we try to talk to them, or continually question us on whether or not we thought we should be there. I am more than aware after this summer that the work we are doing is challenging a lot of convention, and is consequently causing some to feel as though their comfort zone is changing. However, I do not want to be negative as for the most part academics and others are very impressed by our work, and the foresight of those funding and leading the project. This was seen again at RAISE, and I would like to end by saying a final thanks to Dr Mark Gatenby, Dr Lisa Harris and Dr Stefan Cantore for their support and guidance over the past year.

From me personally, I’d like to thank everyone for reading the articles on the blog, and for following it, I hope you have found at least some of my rambling’s interesting! It is now time for a new editor of this blog, and they will be announced shortly after the start of the new term. I wish them luck and will continue to give my full support. Hopefully you are all ready and raring to go for the new term, and I’ll see you all in Southampton soon – T

Another month, another conference, anyone would think we hadn’t had a summer holiday here in the Co-Creation Group!
