Last Thursday, we had the opportunity to attend the University of Southampton’s Institute for Learning, Innovation and Development Awards Ceremony for Excellence in use of VLE’s. This is held to recognise modules across all disciplines and levels which make excellent use of VLE systems, including Blackboard, module blogs and Social Media channels.<\/p>\n

From 246 applications in total, staff from the Business School had three modules included among the 26 shortlisted for two different awards. MANG1020 (Ideas 1) and UOSM2008 (Living and Working on the Web) were nominated for the Student Feedback award (an award given for a module that students had specifically recognised as making excellent use of VLEs) and the Placement Preparation Module which was nominated by the staff for use of a dedicated WordPress blog.<\/p>\n

After quickly taking our seats on a sunny lunchtime, we were delighted that the first award of the ceremony went to MANG1020! Dr Stefan Cantore went up to collect the award, but not before the organisers explained why they had chosen this module as a winner. They recognised the excellent student feedback noting the MANG1020 BlackBoard site as a “hub” for those on the module. They also made reference to the use of introductory videos for week, Pinterest boards providing context, and interactive quizzes for students to fill out to summarise and consolidate learning.<\/p>\n

This was really great to hear, especially since this was one of the modules that students helped to co-create. The two module leaders, Dr Stefan Cantore and Dr Mark Gatenby, gave a number thanks to people who had helped them on this module. They thanked Dr Lisa Harris, who’s experience and support was incredibly valuable as well as the students and Digital Champions involved in helping to co-create the module. They also thanked ILIAD for their help in support in producing the module.<\/p>\n

Just as we were settling down from this award, the Business School were again called upon, this time Rob Jack took to the stage to collect the award for his placement preparation module. An 100% success rate for the business school!<\/p>\n

As far as next steps go, all involved in both of these modules are keen to pass on what they have learnt, and what students have fed back to them, to other modules inside and out of the business school. This echoes the purpose of the event, which is not just to recognise excellence but also to disseminate that excellence across the University, improving the use of VLEs on an institutional basis. True to this, Dr Stefan Cantore was immediately asked to do an interview on camera, which other staff members can view, to share his thoughts on module development and use of VLEs.<\/p>\n

As a student, it is great to get recognition for something you have worked on with lecturers and others – although the body of the congratulations should most definitely go to them! As with all work inside this co-creation project, it is really great to see the enthusiasm at Southampton for improving the student learning experience, all we need to do is make sure we make the most of this opportunity!<\/p>\n
