Similar to the activities undergoing within our co-design group currently set-up within the business school. We attended because it was an ideal opportunity to learn procedures within other universities and effectively better-them, in order to ensure we really can be one of the leading business schools in the country.

The first session was a discussion within our groups (tables of around 7 members). The conversation that I sparked was “Are students consumers? What are they buying?”. A question I am sure many of us have had throughout the time as university. We concluded it was similar to that of a gym membership; you can pay the money but unless the ‘consumer’ puts the effort in, the results will be negligible.

    Sam in ALDinHE

    Sam Dressed as Adam Smith!

The Creator of Capitalism and his House…

    Mark enjoying Adam Smiths Legacy

Throughout the first day, we had other smaller, more intimate sessions on peer-assisted learning and how students can help other students. Whether that be with facilitator led discussions, helping the transition into higher education, or with research, one of the best ways of learning is through student-to-student interaction. So this is something we will look into for next years’ first years.

On the next day, 23rd March 2016, Stefanos went to the second day of the conference where he covered more technological innovations used in higher education and he even did some learning with playdoh!

Mark and I went on a road trip to a few locations near Edinburgh to conduct some research for MANG1020 and MANG1021 next year. The aim was to scope out the locations for future visits and also create some material, such as podcasts, for use in the modules. First we drove to Kirkcaldy, a town about 12 miles north of Edinburgh.

Kirkcaldy is the birthplace of the philosopher and economist Adam Smith (who we looked at briefly looked at in MANG1020: ‘Where do nations get wealth?’. He actually wrote the book “The Wealth of Nations” in his mother’s house in Kirkcaldy; which is now a Greggs. Additionally, and more regularly, Kirkcaldy was the birth place of Gordon Brown.

Furthermore, on the Wednesday we visited New Lanark, a World Heritage Site, and were fortunate enough to meet with the Director, Lorna Davidson. We had an interview with her too and got a really interesting insight into Robert Owen and some of the real world applications of partnership-led business; such as the John Lewis Partnership.

If you do have any questions regarding the conference please contact sp1g15@soton.ac.uk and I will answer ASAP.

On the 22nd March 2016, Dr Mark Gatenby, Dr Stefanos Marangos and I (Samuel Phelps) visited the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (or ALDinHE) at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
