{"id":200,"date":"2016-04-18T17:08:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T17:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/?p=200"},"modified":"2016-05-31T20:47:17","modified_gmt":"2016-05-31T20:47:17","slug":"emotional-intelligence-mang1017-lecture-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/lectures\/2016\/04\/emotional-intelligence-mang1017-lecture-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Emotional Intelligence: MANG1017 Lecture Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-201\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Emotional-Intelligence-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Emotional Intelligence\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Emotional-Intelligence-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Emotional-Intelligence.jpg 435w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Emotional Intelligence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cthe ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Psychology Today, 2016) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EI Models:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five models proposed as a means of better defining EI: the<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ability Mode<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">l,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trait Model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mixed Model,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bar-On model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Genos model. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within the lecture, we focused mainly on the Mixed Model and The Ability Model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mixed Model:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Universal Class, 2016)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Often used in corporate\/professional setting to train and evaluate management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outlines five essential EI constructs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1) <\/span><b>Self Awareness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; recognising one\u2019s own emotions, strengths, weaknesses<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2)<\/span><b> Self-Regulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; recognising one\u2019s owns negative\/disruptive emotions and redirecting them to be productive\/positive,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3) <\/span><b>Social Scale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Utilizing the first two to secure and maintain relationships,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4)<\/span><b> Empathy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; The ability to personally identify with the challenges of another. Not to be confused with Sympathy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5) <\/span><b>Motivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; it is theorized that a person with a high EQ will be able to successfully motivate themselves to achieve goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within each construct, Goleman listed capabilities that can be achieved in order to reach new levels of performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ability Model: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Universal Class, 2016)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mixed Model received criticism due to aspects included that weren\u2019t directly related to either emotion or intelligence. The Ability Model acts as an alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recognises 4 types of ability:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Emotional Perception<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; recognizing emotions of others through facial expressions\/body language<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Use of Emotion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; ability to use emotions to achieve desired outcomes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Understanding Emotions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Understanding the complexity of emotions. E.g. conflicting emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Managing Emotions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211; \u00a0ability to regulate emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unlike the Mixed Model, The Ability Model\u2019s validity in the workplace has been criticised. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interesting Statistics:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a multinational consulting firm, partners who showed high EQ earned 139% more than the lower EQ partners (Boyzatis 1999). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Top performing sales clerks are 12 times more productive than those at the bottom and 85% more productive than an average performer. Two thirds of this difference is due to emotional competence (Goleman 1998). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Future of Emotional Intelligence: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Peter Salovey: \u201cThe real challenge is to show that emotional intelligence matters over-and-above psychological constructs that have been measured for decades like personality and IQ.
