If you have any lecture notes you wish to share, please to get in touch.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Davidson<\/p>\n<p>******<\/p>\n<p><b>Class and Inequality<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cSocial inequality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> occurs when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>German Sociologist, Max Weber, said that power has \u201cthe ability to impose one\u2019s will on another, even when the other objects\u201d and that Authority is \u201cthe legitimate power; used with consent of the ruled\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In order for society to work well together, subordinates have to believe in the authority and agree with their distribution of power. Otherwise, it can result in social conflict. An extreme case of this would be the civil uprising in Syria in 2011, where massive opposition demonstrations against the Government of Bashar al-Assad occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-189\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-12-at-13.48.52-300x236.png\" alt=\"Social Inequality Comic\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-12-at-13.48.52-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/bscbusinessmanagement\/files\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-12-at-13.48.52.png 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A known attribute and inequality of class within society is that majority of power congregates towards the \u201cTop 1%\u201d of the population, who own more global wealth than the other 99%. It may explain social reproduction, the tendency of social classes to remain stable across generations &#8211; maintaining most of their inequalities as well.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Differences in social groups as a result of inequality: income, wealth, access to education, pension levels and social status. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both agreed that economics played a central role in power distinction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other key theories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conflict Theory &#8211; Power is the core of all social relationships, special interest groups fight over scarce resources of society in order to gain advantages. Society becomes off-balance until a dominant group takes control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marxism Theory &#8211; Power is gained through economics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key Questions to reflect on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is Power?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To what degree does Power exist?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is social inequality inevitable in all societies? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do you believe are the major social inequalities?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who are the Top 1%?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Relevant Reference Links: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Economist, 2012).
