Chang is part of the research group of University of Cambridge and he is working on alternative approaches to economics, history of economic thought and methodology. This could be observed throughout his book, as he offers the readers a different way of looking at economics and what it actually means for the world.

This book was given to me in a lecture on week 5 of ‘Ideas that Shaped the Business World: Markets and Consumers’ and I honestly enjoyed reading it and I gained a lot out of it such as looking at economics from a different perspective, a more contemporary I would say. It is very open minded book by an open minded and innovative author and I would love to read more books from Chang. The book can easily be read within a month and it can be managed by almost everyone, students, adults, even our grandparents can read it because the author explains every term he uses and gives a simple definition of words such as money, goods, services, capital goods and capitalism among other. This book is easy- going, as Chang uses simple language and it is very appealing for people whose first language is not English, thus nobody should face any difficulty reading it.

Even though the author is an economist in his fifties and having a lot of experiences and knowledge, he does not consider himself as an expert on the subject of economics and this shows his modesty and how open minded he is. What I particularly liked in the book is the following which shows that economists cannot explain everything about the economy and the world: ‘The economy is too important to be left to the professional economists alone.’ (Pg.457) Chang encourages everyone to be involved in the economy as a whole and he makes the reader to analyse and think deeply about what he/she can do to change the world for better days to come. Moreover, comparisons are made between Adam Smith’s days and recent years enabling the readers to distinguish between companies’ structures, workers, markets, financial institutions etc. In my opinion, comparison between the past and the present are vital for a broad understanding of the subject and this improves our critical thinking and other skills.

All in all, I believe that by reading books you broaden your horizons and I highly recommend getting a hard copy of Ha- Joon Chang’s book, not only because it is easy- going but also because it is entertaining with a humoristic tone and this makes learning cheerful and appealing. What I have gained out of this book is to improve my English, think from different angles, improve my knowledge and lastly not being bored to read a book!

Economics: The User’s Guide, By Ha- Joon Chang. London: Pelican, 2014.
