With much help from Leigh Johnstone from the Fluid Motion Theatre Company, we were able to develop these much difficult skills using innovative and engaging activities such as freeze frames and forum theatre.

Leigh first assigned the lecture theatre into 5 groups, where we were instructed to construct a freeze frame based on a short sentence we were given. This ranged from ‘Stranger in the office’ to ‘Family conflict’. This took many business students who had never interacted with theatre studies before, out of their comfort zone and pushed them to embrace team work and a new meaning of the word creativity. My group focused on developing a story line to embed into our photograph snap shot. We included different levels and facial expressions and portrayed our feelings through our stance and posture.

Before Leigh could work on our feedback skills, we had to demonstrate our feedback abilities as they currently stood. Therefore, once a group has performed their freeze frame, the other four groups had to provide constructive criticism and positive feedback. This activity made the students realise how hard it is to critic groups in a professional manner. Leigh taught us to always start with our positive feedback as well as suggesting ways to improve, instead of dictating.

Next, three volunteers were sent out of the room before Leigh introduced one at a time back into room to improvise at the front of the lecture theatre. Each performance was a scene between a manager and a staff member on their first day of work. However, the way the manager provided feedback was altered between each act. In the first scene, the manager was very vague and unhelpful with his criticism. Secondly, the manager was extremely harsh, rude and unprofessional and thirdly, the manager was too overly friendly and helpful. The exercise helped students to realise there are many ways that feedback can be unsuccessfully given and we need to decipher the correct amount, how critical we are being and the way we are delivering our feedback.

Our final exercise, was to put what we learnt into action using the process of forum theatre. There was a scene commencing at the front of the room, which the audience could decide to stop at any time, and swap an actor for themselves. In this scenario, a manager was giving feedback to a staff member on their inappropriate relationship with another employee. This gave students the opportunity to embrace what they had learnt and step in to a manager’s shoes and provide successful feedback and try to resolve the situation.

This lecture allowed the students to actively participate in their learning and keep an engaged audience throughout. I left with my fellow students in an extremely positive mood, as the lecture had broken up our monotonous day of lectures with a fun and interactive 2 hours. I’m extremely pleased I attended this lecture, and am excited at the opportunity to work with Leigh Johnstone in the future.

Text Written by Melissa Vickery

25th February Key Skills lecture This week, our Avenue lecture was based on the concept of feedback, the appropriate way to speak to our colleges, employees and employers.
