Successful mentoring is based upon trust and confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is a mentor?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A mentor is someone who has a genuine interest in overseeing and supporting the career and development of another person outside the normal supervision process.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is the role of a mentor?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A mentoring relationship is one where both mentor and mentee recognise the need for personal development. The role of a mentor includes that of guide, support, critical friend, sounding board, devil\u2019s advocate, confidante, information giver, role model.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>University of Southampton Mentoring\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This service offers a unique career mentoring programme supported by the EPSRC\u00a0and developed through a collaboration between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diversity Office <\/a>and the Professional Development Unit at the University of Southampton.
