Final Reflective Post – See you space cowboys…

So the UOSM2033 module finally concludes and I can safely say that I have, in fact, lived and worked on the web. This is where I talk about my experience, what I’ve done, how I’ve done it, how I felt about it, and what I’ve learned. So blogging is a fairly new experience for me – I think I may have set up a couple of blogs in the past and made a few posts – but the newest experience is maintaining a blog. Continue reading →

Open Access on the internet – Piracy is a Service Problem

“Piracy is a service problem” – Gabe Newell, founder of digital video game store Steam, one of the most successful digital stores in the world Before I make my cool points about free open content on the internet and put on my sunglasses and surf, I’m going to talk briefly about Netflix. See traditional media hit a bit of a snag once the internet strolled into town, I mean pirated movies used to be easy to crack down on – you just arrested the distributor. Continue reading →

Reflecting on Creating a Professional Online Profile

So I decided to throw caution to the wind and take a unique approach to the topic, talking about creating an online professional profile in order to work independently in a creative field. The topic is a lot bigger than I made it out to be however; for instance creations can be crowd-funded using Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, or Patreon. My post also ended up effectively becoming a glorified Reddit advert. Continue reading →

Creating a Digital Professional Profile to become a Freelance Content Creator

The internet is a great tool for professionals. There are a lot of sites such as LinkedIn to help you find companies to work for and share your CV around with and the like. However, I have never had a  proper job – I can’t write about actual employment because I simply don’t know about it (but hey, maybe some of these UOSM2033 Topic 3 blog posts can help me out). One Online Identity or Many: A Reflection

The debate between the ideas of one online identity or many is one that is too complex and far reaching to ever be settled in one 400 word blog post. I felt like I took a balanced approach to the topic and covered some good topics, there were so many others that were brought up by my peers. Katie mentioned the idea of having multiple profiles to separate your personal and professional lives. Continue reading →

One Online Identity or Many?

The topic of having one online identity or many reminded me of something I remember from my younger days. When I was at school, I remember being taught one of the most important rules of the web was to never tell people your real name or give out any personal details. The threat of cyber-crime was one that people were very much afraid of, and the idea that somebody you’d never even met could know your name was a horrifying notion for the people of the early 2000’s. Digital Visitors and Digital Residents: Reflection

When reflecting on this topic the aspect I found the most interesting wasn’t so much the topic but the task itself. Anything I had written in the past was written for my own sake, or was a short comment or Facebook post on something else. I’d only ever written something I wanted to read, and never really thought about writing something that other people would want to read. Continue reading →
