Season 2013/14 Round Up.

The Southampton University Basketball Club have had an absolutely epic season all round from our Men’s teams, the Girls and the Dev Squad… the girls and boys are back from tour having made Team Southampton proud, and as the committee handover is well underway, I thought it’d be a good idea to finish with a round up and some photos from throughout the year.

1275921_715020788549947_220537872_oMen’s 1sts had a great start to their BUCS campaign and were top of their league for almost the entire year but unfortunately missed out on winning it by only a couple of points in the last game. They should still be proud, as they went on to win the BUCS Conference Cup in Wales against rivals Bristol 1sts, which was a huge achievement and great way to finish off the season! A highlight which won’t be forgotten in a long time, was of course that incredible finish to, arguably, the best moment in Varsity with our boys beating Pompey with a huge 3 on the buzzer!

CaptureMen’s 2nds had a great season having been promoted into the same league as the 1sts last year, splitting their games with Plymouth 1sts, Marjon 1sts and beating Bristol 2nds home and away. They finished the season strong winning 4 from 9, and the boys can be confident going into next year! A lot of new players have pulled out great performances over the season, so next year is looking good for the boys.

Capture2The Women’s team had a hugely successful year acknowledged by Southampton’s AU with a nomination for Team of the Year! The girls went on an impressive unbeaten streak to win the Western 1A League in style! We started our BUCS Trophy campaign strong but were knocked out by eventual winners Birmingham. In our fight for Premiership promotion, having beaten premier team Exeter in an unforgettable game which went to overtime, we narrowly missed out, falling short at home vs winners of Southern 1A league winners Queen Mary’s. However, the girls are looking to finish their season on another high in their SABA League cup semi final next week.

Capture3Dev Squad had a great year with a record high number of players, fielding two teams in the Southampton Uni’s Intramural league. The boys in Sharks A dominated and finished on top as league winners! The boys look strong and friendlies are already being arranged with talk of joining the SABA league… Next year looks promising for the boys, so keep an eye out for that.

Tomorrow, 2nd May sees the biggest night of the year, the Athletic’s Union Ball, and everyone here at SUBC cannot wait! It was great to see all of the nominations for the basketball club this year, with the club and individuals in the running for a number awards, check them out hereThe club have nominations for The Athletic Union Award, The James Artherton Sport and Wellbeing Award, and Team of the Year, so fingers crossed on the night!

The season isn’t quite over just yet though, Saturday sees the return of all the old Sharks for Alumni which is set to be another epic night and an interesting match up on court from 12pm – 4pm with the oldies vs the current Men’s and Women’s teams in the Jubilee. Additionally the girls have a SABA cup to win and a number of friendlies which will keep us ballin’ up until exams!

On this note, I shall now pass on the Communications/Social Media role to Taurai who I’m sure will do a great job entertaining and keeping friends, family and alumni up-to-date on our facebook page over the coming year.

For one last time, #LetsGoSharks.
