Away games:

  • Men’s 1st went to Plymouth to play against the University of Plymouth Men’s 1st. They left with very few players from the first team and they were also missing the coach. Thanks to 3 players from the second they were able to have 8 players at the game. It was going to be hard.
The first quarter didn’t go well, Sharks lost 23 to 13 due to some poor start. The second quarter was much better and Southampton managed to hold the score (15 -12). Sharks were losing by 13 points and it was not going to get better in the next quarter. The men’s lost it 14 to 7 and it gave Plymouth a 20 point lead.
The fourth quarter was the proof that they could have won this game if they had done better the previous quarters. Indeed, they fought their way and tried to bring back the score. They won the quarter 5 to 14.
Final score: 57 – 48Knowing that they could have won it even though a huge majority of the 1st team was missing; we will expect them to win against Plymouth when they come to Jubilee!
  • Women’s 1st were “traveling” to St Marys where they faced Solent University and brought us back the Win! The game didn’t start well, Sharks conceded points to Solent. The first quarter ended with 20 (Solent) – 10 (Sharks).
Nevertheless, they kept fighting. The second quarter finished with 18 – 20 for our women. This wasn’t enough and they had to fight more to win the game.
The second half of the game went very well for Sharks. They controlled the game and managed to win both quarters, which won them the game.
    Third quarter: 8 – 19

Saturday 5 of November:

  • Our Men’s 1st travelled to Exeter to meet Exeter Eagles. Sharks were quick and imposed a good tempo on the game in the first half. The first quarter was tight, however, the tempo picked up in the second quarter and gave a distinctive advantage to Southampton.
    First quarter: 17 (Eagles) – 20 (Sharks)
    Second quarter: 15 – 32
Sharks were now well ahead and needed to continue on this road so that the victory could be assured. Nevertheless, the third quarter was shaky and Sharks were nervous. They lost the third quarter, 24 -16. The lead was reduced and our Men’s 1st had to find the energy to continue fighting. The fourth quarter was fortunately won by Southampton, 19 – 28.
The game ends with a score of 75 – 96.
Well played to the first team, we hope this game didn’t use too much of their energy considering they had another national game the next day.

Sunday 6 of November:

  • The next day, the Men’s 1st met Plymouth Rebels at the Jubilee Sports Centre. It was a very close game. Even though it took a few minutes before they got in the game, Sharks led the first half only by a few points and managed to keep their tempo in place.
    First quarter: 18 (Sharks) – 14 (Rebels)
    Second quarter: 15 – 13
Coming into the third quarter they managed to increase their lead, unfortunately, Plymouth played with more energy and were able to pull it off. They won the quarter 19 – 25.
The Rebels had tied the game.
The fourth quarter continued in the same pattern as the third quarter. Plymouth was leading and it seemed that the Men’s 1st were having a bit of trouble. Nevertheless, they managed to fight back and tied the game thanks to some last second free-throws from Tom. The ball was for the visitors and they only had a few seconds to win the game. Sharks only had to try and block the attempts from Plymouth. Sadly, one of their players managed to get free in the very last second and drop a buzzer beater layup. Plymouth won 71 – 73.
Even though a victory would have been nicer, we must keep our hopes high for this team who is proving to be a great team this year.
