Meet the Captain of our Women’s Team!

The new season is almost upon us, and as a club we are so ready and excited to welcome in all the fresh new faces and talent. We have had a great response to our upcoming trials on our facebook page (don’t forget to sign up here,) and we thought we’d give you a little insight into SUBC life and introduce you all to our new Captain of the Women’s Team, Freya Mumby, in our first Player Spotlight.

Hey Freya, so tell us, how did last season go for the Women’s team?

Last year was an extremely successful year for the Women’s team; from winning the BUCS 1A league, which led to premier playoffs, to reaching the semi finals in the National BUCS cup! At the end of the year, all of our efforts paid off and our biggest achievement was being awarded Sports Team of the Year by the Athletics Union of Southampton! This award meant so much for the team, not only for all the hard work the girls had put in last year, but also the fact that the University was able to recognise our accomplishments.

As well as that, the team had a great social connection which helped make the year a lot of fun and allowed memories to be made. From hitting the night life in London to hilarious nights out in Southampton, such as at the AU Ball where we won that well deserved award!

Amazing socials really helped bring the team together which always showed when playing on court.

Wow, what an incredible season, will be hard to beat! Highlight of the year off court?

Too many great memories, it is impossible to name just one! Definitely, on the list, it has to be the night the girls won Team of the Year. The feeling of coming out on top, against the rest of the nominated the teams in Southampton, it was just really memorable and we all felt really proud. So proud in fact we kept reminding ourselves and others of our accomplishment, whether it was celebrating it down with more drinks or just yelling it out every chance we could. Another memory has to be when all the girls hit London Town for the night, after a hard game against Kings earlier on in the day. It was a chance for the girls to really blow off some steam, outside of Southampton and experience City life. Definitely something that brought us closer. Another off court highlight would have to be the granny social the girls did. Such a hilarious night, bringing out the mature side in ourselves (not!) as well has cracking up over the amount of Talcom powder girls were using in their hair, not knowing that it was suffocating the rest of us !

What are you looking forward to next season?

Definitely looking forward to new faces! Its what makes the team exciting, having to start all over again with meeting new people and building that relationship. Personally that’s what I think helps make a team a team; if the relationship is great, then so will the game we play.

I’m also looking forward to a new coach David Senart and seeing what his ideas are like. It can be hard going from one coach to another, especially if they have completely different strategies and methods. But it will be intriguing and, together with our successful application to focus sports, hopefully something we can use to continue our success as a basketball team.

Looking forward to seeing you all at trials, it is going to be an amazing year!

So there you have it, a little taster of things to come if you decide to join the Southampton University Basketball Club. This season promises to be incredible, and Freya and the rest of the team are eagerly awaiting the day of trials to welcome all the new faces and to start off the season as we mean to go on!
