Finishing 2013 on Top!

Wow, what a start to the season and what a way to finish off the year!

Our teams are currently dominating their respective leagues, with both the Men’s 1sts, the Women’s team and Sharks A from the Dev. Squad sitting nicely at the top. It is worth mentioning that our Men’s 2nds teams are in the same league as the 1sts and they have had a great start to their campaign, currently sitting in 3rd place. Great work all round!

Starting with the Men’s 1sts, they couldn’t be in a better position right now in the BUCS league having won 5 from 5, taking all 15 points! In the battle of the top of the table last week, the boys took on Bristol 1sts to ensure there would be only one team with a 100% record. Now the team just needs to keep their composure, and dominate the second half of the season in order to win the league and gain that promotion! Next year the team will look to transfer their BUCS success into their National League games, where the team are coming up against some tough competition, yet are improving every week. Looking forward to see what 2014 holds for the boys!

The Men’s 2nds have had a great start in the Western 2A League, following promotion last year, having won 3 from 5! Please check out the live blogging from their recent Away victory against Bristol 2nds, thanks to Jack Kanani at the Wessex Scene. The 2nds are in a great position with their only losses coming from the crunch match against our own 1st team, and against the Bristol 1sts during the first game of the season. Since then, the team has improved greatly and we look forward to the rerun in 2014!

Sharks A and Sharks B, our two teams from our Development Squad are representing in the Intra Mural league! Sharks A recently fought off the challenge from the boys from CSSA last weekend, beating them 34 – 29 to remain at the top of the table with 7 wins from 7! The Sharks B are comfortably sat at mid- table. Go on Sharks!

Following a hard start to their season with 2 dramatic losses in overtime, the girls have gone from strength to strength each week, and have enjoyed 7 victories on the run, taking them straight to the top of the table. It is hard to believe that the girls have yet to enjoy a game with a full, healthy team, having been unlucky injury wise, keeping out different key players each game. Hard work at training really does pay off, and in terms of the BUCS league, the task for 2014 is simple, we win out, we win the league. Please check the results section to read our Coach’s match reports! The girls are also looking to extend their cup run, where they will meet their local rivals Winchester, 2 weeks back to back in the league and cup for the 3rd and 4th time this year! The girls are ready!

SUBC really are in a great position going into this Christmas period… to put it into perspective, our club are currently in 2nd position in the BUCS points leader board for Southampton University, bringing in an incredible 64 points! This is a huge accomplishment for the club as we are second only to the Hockey club which consists of 8 teams to our 3, with 73 points! In terms of individual teams, our Women’s team are currently in joint 1st position out of the entire Athletics Union, bringing in the highest number of BUCS points with a total of 30 so far. What a way to represent! GO SUBC!

Now time to focus on maintaining our fitness over the Christmas period, staying away from that extra mince pie, and following Coach Jon’s workout routine! I can fully agree with Men’s 1sts Captain Omar here as he says, “Although it’s only a few weeks, I’m going to miss every single one of you SUBC Members” adding, “… let’s come back next half much better, faster and stronger!”

Here at SUBC, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year… Enjoy your holidays and let the success continue into 2014!
