Abstract

untitled-diagramPlanning for an offshore wind farm (OWF) is a multi-discipline planning scheme. First is to study the feasibility of deploying this kind of renewable energy in a certain part of the sea, or to locate the most suitable place in a larger space, (a country for example or maybe a whole continental), also to calculate the LCOE. Second is to optimize the layout to reduce the wake effect. Next is to select the proper foundation for the suitable site, the design it. Finally, is to study the environmental effects on the surrounding ecosystems.

The main aim of this research is to cover the past steps, which are summarized in the flow chart to identify suitable locations in Egypt that have potential for offshore wind power generation and how can these be exploited. Also to design appropriate wind turbine arrays providing clear understanding of the resources, engineering needs, deployment and decommissioning. Suitable locations will be identified and mapped using geographical information system (GIS) linked to a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), initially targeting locations in the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba in Egypt.
