Autonomous Robotic Systems

Kinetica Art Fair 2011

The surreal, dream-like, almost ghostly movement of the piece invokes feelings of surprise and disbelief which proceed initial disappointment and confusion over what is apparently an inanimate object. Our concept is designed to provoke fear in the user’s mind about the possibility of an accident happening to a priceless object of desire.

The work includes an organic table form upon which a priceless antique oriental vase is placed. The user will approach the exhibit and unknowingly interact with it. The table will include proximity sensors which when triggered will cause the vase to react using movement. The direction, speed and destination of the vase will depend on the actions of the people surrounding the table as well as random influences.

Middlesex University – Product Design and Engineering
This is a collaborative effort between staff and students working in the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) and Mindsets, formerly Middlesex University Teaching Resources (MUTR).

The Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) took part in the KAF 2010 with their well received Heineken Robot, which automated the process of serving beer (See Middlesex website: http://www.mdx.ac.uk/aboutus/news-events/news/beerbot.aspx).

Mindsets (formerly MUTR)
Mindsets supports design and technology teachers during times of very rapid change. It provides a wide range of smart materials and science resources.  (See website:  www.mutr.co.uk).

The Design Team:

Dr. Stephen Prior is a Reader in Autonomous Robotic Systems and founded the ASL at Middlesex University.
