PhD studentships in Magnetic Resonance @ Southampton

Fully funded PhD studentship in hyperpolarized NMR and MRI available

A fully-funded PhD studentship (fees + maintenance) is available in the research group of Prof. Malcolm H Levitt FRS at the University of Southampton. We are preparing substances in hyperpolarized states, meaning that the nuclear spins are significantly aligned, giving rise to NMR and MRI signals which are many orders of magnitude stronger than is usually the case. This phenomenon opens up numerous potential applications in analytical NMR and clinical MRI. We are combining hyperpolarization with techniques developed in our group that extend the lifetime of the hyperpolarization, and collaborating with numerous laboratories worldwide, with expertise ranging from quantum physics to the medical imaging of cancer.

We have several open PhD studentship positions.

Positions are fully funded for UK/EU students. However we cannot cover the fees for students from outside the EU.

Many of our PhD studentships are funded through the iMR-CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training in Integrated Magnetic Resonance). This is an activity currently distributed over six UK universities, which teaches all aspects of magnetic resonance (including EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance), NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), DNP (dynamic nuclear polarization) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) as an integrated subject. Go to the iMR-CDT website for more details.

To enquire about studentships, go through any staff member (see the sidebar). We share information on student applications with each other.

You can also apply directly to the iMR-CDT.
