Placements Process

Providing placements should be a simple and hassle-free process, and the Placements Office is happy to provide guidance if you are looking to set up a placement programme. Placements Process

From the first week of their first year at the University of Southampton, all of our students enjoy a variety of seminars, lectures, and workshops prior to their placement to ensure they are well-prepared to join your organisation. These include advice on making applications, developing commercial awareness, and more. We welcome the involvement of employers in these sessions.

Having made the decision to advertise for a placement opportunity, we will work with you to ensure your role is advertised to the relevant students. Many employers choose to visit the University of Southampton prior to advertising and speak with our students; it’s up to you. We will carry out some basic checks to ensure that the placement is valuable to all involved, then post it on our private jobs board.

You retain complete control over the application process, although we are happy to assist as required. You are not obliged to accept a student but can be assured that candidates will be of a high standard. Having found your ideal placement student, you make them an offer of employment in the usual way. Then we collect some information from you and the student to approve the placement.

During their placement, your new employee remains a student of the University of Southampton. We continue to provide support to both you and the student. We will visit the organisation at least once during the year to check how things are progressing. This will include a meeting with the student and a meeting with their line manager. Also, we supply personal development documents to students which the student can use to track progress but if you have your own already, you can of course use these.

After their placement, our students return to the University of Southampton to complete their final year of studies. Many find employment with their placement provider post-graduation. During their final year, students take part in post-placement sessions to advise new students on how to get the most from their placement. Your organisation continues to enjoy links and support from the university; maybe even another student next year!
