Make Your Place: Co-designing the towns and cities of the future

Sian Campbell and Ruby Jackson

Make Your Place is a schoolā€™s enterprise programme developed by Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton, in collaboration with Southampton City Council and the Solent LEP. Ā It was developed from a successful Enterprise Challenge delivered by Sian Campbell to a small group of NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) students at a local college.

The purpose of the challenge was initially to get the young people to think about how they could sell their city, and has evolved into a much wider programme about the diversity and economy of our ā€˜placeā€™ and its importance to the UK.

The programme is multidisciplinary, bringing together business and enterprise, innovation, engineering, sustainability, and marketing. At its core, it empowers young people to have a voice in determining how they want to live in the future, and importantly, how they can contribute to its success. The programme is currently being rolled out to over 230 Year 9 Southampton based pupils at The Future Towns Innovation Hub, and 100 college students in the New Forest. This presentation discusses the inception of the programme, the benefits to our communities, some early themes and challenges, and concludes with some plans for future workstreams.
